Claude Skills Are the Marketer’s Productivity Multiplier

by Lisa Peyton, full-time faculty at the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication and a Forbes Communications Council member.

Let’s talk about Claude, baby…let’s talk about you and me, let’s talk about all the things…I digress. Today we’re talking about Claude Skills and yes, in my mind they are about as good as sex!

Claude skills are the quietly confident task masters that run in the background, called upon when needed, that save you TONS of time explaining, training, teaching, and showing. They are what give Claude’s output their edge and differentiate your content from everyone else’s. Claude skills are seamlessly integrated into your current Claude workflows and make bespoke and branded outputs looks easy. Claude skills are what move your from AI curious to AI master.

If you’re already using Claude, you’re most of the way there. If you’re not using Claude yet, this is your reason to start. Every marketer working with AI should be building these, and by the end of this you’ll know exactly what they are, what mine look like, and how to build your own.

What is a Claude skill?

A Claude skill is a set of instructions you write once and save, so Claude follows them every time instead of handing you a slightly different result on every run. You save it as a file (a SKILL.md), add it to Claude, and from then on Claude reaches for it whenever the work calls for it. Same structure, same quality bar, whether it’s the start of your week or the end of it.

You don’t have to think about file systems or anything technical. A skill is just your best instructions, captured once so you never have to reconstruct them from memory again.

Skills are where the productivity actually multiplies

The real gain isn’t typing faster. It’s that you stop rebuilding your standard from scratch, over and over, until the work gets done in a fraction of the time and comes out sharper.

Think about what eats your day. It’s not the first draft. It’s the cleanup. Fixing the same AI tells for the hundredth time. Re-explaining your brand voice. Re-deciding how a title should land. Re-checking whether a source actually says what a summary claims it says. A skill absorbs all of that once, and then it’s handled, every time, without you burning an entire morning or losing your sh*t over fixing the same issue for the hundredth time.

That’s why I say the multiplier hits both quantity AND quality at the same time. More work out the door, and better work, because the standard is baked into the skill instead of riding on how much energy you happen to have that day. The skill does the remembering. You do the deciding.

What’s in my Claude skill stack?

More than twenty skills, and they run the spine of my entire publishing business. A few of the ones I reach for constantly:

  • no-ai-tells strips the clichés, the em dashes, and a long list of specific banned phrases out of anything before it goes public. It’s the reason my copy doesn’t read like it came off an assembly line.
  • title-writer turns a finished draft into bold, declarative title options pulled from my own language, not generic headline bait.
  • research-report-protocol forces a full read of every source before I make a single claim about what’s in it. No skimming, no AI summary standing in for the real document.
  • handoff suitcase packages a whole working session into a portable doc I can pick back up in any model. With recent model access disruptions, having my work portable across tools has saved me more than once.
  • citation-worthy-rubric scores a piece on whether AI engines can actually pull from it. More on that one next, because it’s the skill that built this post.

The skill that tells me whether AI will cite my work

I built a skill that scores any piece against six characteristics that correlate with getting cited in AI answers like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews. The six: a distinctive point of view you can name in one sentence, claims specific enough to lift and quote, visible proof that a credible person stands behind the work, a body of related work on the same topic, structure clean enough to extract from, and whether AI crawlers can even reach the page in the first place.

I built this post to that rubric on purpose. The position is stated up top. The claims are specific and mine. The structure answers real questions a reader would ask. And it’ll live open on my site where crawlers can actually read it.

That rubric gets a piece ready to be cited. It does not decide whether the piece competes. Every AI answer is built from a pool of sources the model already trusts for that question, and if your work isn’t in that pool, quality never gets its shot. Getting into the pool is the off-page work, the earned mentions and the original research other people cite. The skill is the first lever, not the only one.

Where to start if you don’t have a stack yet

You don’t need twenty skills to feel the difference. Start with the ones that map to your actual week, build them well, and add from there.

If you want a running start, I packaged seven of my strategy skills into one free bundle, the Claude Skills for B2B Content Marketers: Strategic Intelligence Bundle. Most marketers reach for Claude to write faster. These help you use it to think better before you write. Inside:

  • Research Prompt Engineering for LLMs, so Claude writes you a strong, portable research prompt you can run in any research-capable tool.
  • Persona Development for AI, so your AI personas start from real intelligence instead of guesswork.
  • Research Report Synthesis, which pulls several reports into one coherent view and forces a full read of each.
  • Competitive Intelligence and Gap Analysis, a fast structured scan of what competitors are doing and where your opening is.
  • Market Trend Analysis and Pattern Recognition, turning scattered data points into the patterns that matter.
  • Target Audience Deep Dive, past surface personas into jobs to be done and the language your audience actually uses.
  • The Handoff Suitcase as a bonus, so your work moves between models without losing a thing.

How to build a skill that produces great work, not just good output

The trick isn’t writing better instructions cold and hoping. It’s meta-prompting, which is having Claude help you write the instructions in the first place. You hand Claude the goal, you ask it to interview you, and the instructions that come out are sharper than anything you’d have written from a blank page, because they’re built on what Claude actually needs to do the job well.

There’s a method to it. Start with an outstanding example as your template. Add one line to your request that invites Claude’s reasoning, “ask me anything you need to give me the best output.” Then test it two ways, with your own eyes and by handing the output back to Claude to judge. That loop is where the work goes from good to extraordinary.

I wrote the whole method down, the three golden tips, the seven-step build, the copy-paste prompt starters, and a master list of skills worth building, in a free field guide.
