Deep, Deeper, Deepest: Which AI is the Best Deep Research tool for Marketers?

by Lisa Peyton and her team of AI superheroes

Large language models (LLMs) are getting more powerful by the day—but with that power comes complexity. For marketers trying to stay ahead of the curve, the ever-expanding list of AI tools can feel less like a shortcut and more like a maze. Each platform claims to be the best at research, content creation, or strategic insight, but how do you actually choose the right one for the job?

This post is part of my Models for Marketers series, where I put today’s leading AI tools to the test—so you don’t have to. In this installment, I take a close look at how ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Perplexity.ai perform on one of the most high-stakes marketing tasks: deep industry research. I gave each tool’s Deep Research platform the same prompt—to generate a comprehensive report on generative AI in visual marketing for B2B—and compared their output across accuracy, business value, usability, and depth.

The results were revealing. If you’ve been wondering which model delivers the deepest, clearest, and most actionable insights, this face-off is for you.

Quick Verdict: Who Came Out on Top

Here’s a quick snapshot of how each platform performed:

  • ChatGPT Deep Research delivered the most well-rounded and comprehensive report, complete with real-world examples, strong market data, and actionable strategies.
  • Google Gemini Deep Research stood out for its academic rigor and citation quality but leaned more theoretical than practical.
  • Perplexity.ai Deep Research produced a short, accessible report with helpful implementation case studies—though some data points weren’t fully verified.

Now let’s break things down further.

The Deep Dive: How Each Tool Measured Up

1. Fact Check Showdown: Whose Sources Can You Trust?

  • ChatGPT: Mostly accurate, according to the verification summary. Sources were current and credible, including marketing publications, company blogs, and research firms. Market stats were well-cited and relevant.
  • Google Gemini: Rated as “highly accurate” and backed by 95 distinct citations from trusted sources. This gave the report a strong academic foundation.
  • Perplexity.ai: Also rated “mostly accurate,” though the report included a few unverified stats (such as specific market size figures for image generators). Most other data points checked out.

Winner: Google Gemini, for citation quality and academic accuracy.

2. Going the Distance: Which Tool Goes Deepest?

ChatGPT: The most in-depth of the three, with a 13,000-word report covering seven sections. It included tool pricing, practical examples, and detailed implementation guidance.

  • Google Gemini: At approximately 9,500 words, this report was well-organized and covered a lot of ground but included fewer pricing details and implementation examples.
  • Perplexity.ai: The shortest at approximately 5,000 words. It hit all major topics but didn’t go as deep on stats or pricing.

Winner: ChatGPT, for its thorough and expansive coverage.

3. From Strategy to Execution: Which AI Speaks Marketer?

  • ChatGPT: Strong focus on application. Included strategic advice, ROI examples (like Klarna’s $6 million cost savings), and actionable “Best Practices.”
  • Google Gemini: While detailed, it leaned more academic. It addressed implementation and ROI but with fewer specifics.
  • Perplexity.ai: Despite its brevity, it was surprisingly strong in real-world relevance. Case studies from Heinz, Nutella, and BMW brought the content to life.

Winner: ChatGPT, for balancing strategic thinking with tactical depth.

4. Research Without the Headache: Which Report Reads Best?

ChatGPT: Clear structure with useful sub-sections, bullet points, and formatting to make it easier to digest. Accessible to marketing pros without sacrificing depth.

  • Google Gemini: Organized but dense. The academic tone might be less approachable for non-technical readers.
  • Perplexity.ai: The easiest to read. Concise sections, effective formatting, and a direct, accessible tone.

Winner: Perplexity.ai, for clarity and ease of reading.

My Take: How I’m Actually Using These Tools—and Why

As someone who actively works with AI tools and teaches others how to use them, I found this comparison both validating and eye-opening. Each platform clearly has its niche—Google Gemini excels in sourcing and structure, Perplexity wins on speed and usability, and ChatGPT shines with business-ready insights you can actually use.

For my own workflows—whether I’m helping a marketing team build a strategy, leading a training, or crafting content for enterprise clients—ChatGPT Deep Research offers the best mix of detail, relevance, and clarity. It’s not perfect, and yes, it’s long—but the level of actionable information it delivers makes it a worthwhile investment of time.

That said, I still keep all three tools in my toolkit. Depending on the task—academic rigor, quick-turn content, or client-facing deliverables—I’ve found value in using the right tool for the right job.

If you’re exploring how to integrate AI into your content strategy, I recommend experimenting with each to find your own best-fit workflow. And if you’re already using one of these platforms regularly, I’d love to hear your experience.
